2015-horrorThe horror film genre has undergone a resurgence in the last few years. Finally the “found footage” gimmick is being laid to rest and more films are focusing on story development and storytelling.

There are a lot of classic horror films that are being given modern reboots. And the huge popularity of horror TV shows like The Walking Dead, True Blood, and American Horror Story is driving horror movie writers and producers to create better original content. 2015 is going to be a great year for horror and science fiction films if all the films slated to open during the year make it to the screen.

Check out some of the best horror films coming in 2015:

The reboot of Poltergeist will finally be hitting theaters in 2015. Even though the reboot is supposed to get the franchise started again the story isn’t a retelling of the 1980s classic horror film. This story is entirely different and set in a modern setting with a different family. Some people are skeptical that the reboot can match up to the original film, which has influenced three decades of paranormal movies. But writing the script is the Pulitzer Prize winning author of the play The Rabbit Hole and directing is Gil Kenan who was responsible for the animated spooky film Monster House. So it looks like the reboot of this horror classic could be a great way to renew interest in the franchise. The film is set to be released in February of 2015.

The 13th film in the Amityville franchise will be released just after the holidays in early 2015. In the latest story in the franchise a single mother with three kids, one of whom has serious medical problems that leave him unable to communicate as the result of an accident, moves into the infamous home. She and the kids have no idea what the history of the house is but very soon after they move in the paranormal activity starts increasing. While some of the films in this franchise have been a little lackluster the 13th film has gotten a lot of positive buzz and looks like a great addition to the franchise.

Paranormal Activity 5: The Ghost Dimension

Originally the latest installment of the Paranormal Activity franchise was supposed to be released in October like the other installments but that date was pushed back to March 2015. The last installment, The Marked Ones, took the focus of the story off Katie and the original story. But in The Ghost Dimension the focus will be back on the original story. While the plot of the story is being kept under wraps it’s certain that Katie will be appearing and the story will be about the original family.

Insidious Chapter 3

Insidious is back after a rather disappointing second installment. Audiences went crazy for the original film, even though it seemed to be a little similar to Poltergeist. But the second installment was a disappointment for fans who weren’t really wowed by the rather rushed sequel. In the third installment there will be new characters and a new story which the producers are hoping will get people interested in the franchise again. There is a lot of potential for Insidious to become an ongoing saga like Halloween or Friday the 13th if the writers can come up with stories that are a little more compelling and not just rely on gimmicks to string the movie along.

31 is one of the really interesting films that are coming in 2015. The movie is entirely crowdfunded, and it’s the brainchild of horror master Rob Zombie. The basic premise for 31 follows five people who are kidnapped five days before Halloween. They are held captive by a bunch of psychotic clowns and must battle the clowns to save their lives and get free. It’s been said that one of the reasons why Zombie crowdfunded this film was because he wanted it to have no rules and he didn’t want to have to answer to studio executives. If he toned down his past work to please studio executives it will be interesting and terrifying to see what makes it to the screen when he has no restrictions.
