Superheros have always been a part of some of the most beloved cinema for children and adults alike. With classics like Batman, Superman, and more, audiences have always gone wild for superheros. They are becoming ever more popular in today’s society, especially with the growth in movie media and technology. Spider-Man has stood out among the rest of these superheros as one of the most popular.
The series started way back in the year 1962 in a comic book. From there, the series grew into one of the most popular comic strips of all time. The animated Spider-Man series first aired in 1967. Then, in the year 1978, the Amazing Spider-Man live action series appeared. After that, throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s, new Spider-Man animated series continued to appear, year after year, gaining more popularity and following with each appearance. Even now, in the 2000’s (most recently 2012), new Spider-Man animated series continue to arise. The series shows absolutely no sign of backing down.
Spider-Man has also provided for quite the movie franchise. The first film, The Amazing Spider-Man, was released in 2012. The movie focused on an awkward teenage version of Peter Parker as he goes through a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance. The film was ab absolute hit, grossing over $752 million worldwide. In fact, these earnings made it the seventh highest grossing film of 2012 and the highest grossing reboot of all time.
While all of this is impressive, though, the real talk this year was all about The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The sequel was released to theaters, including 3D and IMAX 3D theaters, on May 2nd of this year. While it did not bring in as much as the first film, the movie still managed to gross more than $633 million worldwide. This film also hit a few number one accomplishments in foreign countries. The release in India was the biggest opening weekend of all time for a Hollywood film. It also managed to be the largest release presence of any film ever in China, playing on over 11,000 screens in theaters nationwide. Lastly, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 had the highest opening gross in Hong Kong for any film.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 follows Peter Parker, A.K.A. Spider-Man, as he attempts to fight off his foe, Electro, in order to protect the city. An old friend, Harry Osborn, returns. Spider-Man even comes to realize the one thing that all of his enemies have had in common; Oscorp. As the mystery begins to unfold, Spider-Man goes back and forth between spending time as Peter Parker, spending time with Gwen, learning about himself and who he really is, and ultimately trying to win the fight against his enemies before the time runs out. All of this, coupled with special effects and action sequences, makes for quite the intense movie watching experience.
Moving onto another topic, Halloween is several months away and questions are rising about what are going to be the most popular costumes this year. Well, there is no doubt that Spider-Man will be making an appearance. Superhero costumes, in general, have always been a staple for trick-or-treating and costume parties for many years. Young boys, and now more girls than ever, have been dawning their superhero gear every October with the high hopes of protecting the world, and, of course, bringing in some sweets while doing so.
Spider-Man costumes are neither limited to a gender or an age. In recent years, both boys and girls have been loving to dress up as the various superheros that they look up to and have come to adore. The Spider-Man costume can work for either gender, and it has in past Halloweens. Despite the fact that the character is male, the outfit, itself, does not portray the “male” image. Females could wear the costume and not look out of place at all. Parents have also latched onto the adoration of the non-animated, action film. Whether it be at a costume party, or just trick-or-treating with the little ones, adults love to dress up just as much as kids do. Spider-Man costumes are sure to be a hit this year. Electro costumes will also be making an appearance, for those who want to express their dark sides in a fun way.
