Halloween is a great time to channel your inner Scooby Doo. Scooby Doo and his companions have been solving crimes and investigating mysteries involving ghosts, zombies, vampires and other super scary things since the late 1960s. Originally the series was created by cartoon powerhouse producers Hanna and Barbera as a non-violent replacement for series like Johnny Quest which were very popular with kids but not popular with parents, who considered them too violent. The producers were trying to find a way to create a cartoon that would appeal to kids, to networks, and to parents.
The original show centered around the crime solving dog Scooby Doo and his pal Shaggy. Helping out were also their friends Daphne, the pretty but ditzy member of the team along with Velma and Fred. Velma was the dowdy but super smart member of the squad who made being smart and geeky cool for girls who wanted to be different. Fred was the straightlaced logical thinker who always played by the rules and was the moral compass of the group. Over the years new characters were added, and later subtracted but the core of the Scooby Doo show were the five friends who traveled around in the psychedelic looking Mystery Machine van investigating all kinds of creepy claims.
Musical interludes were an important part of the original Scooby Doo series. They were deliberately put there because kids really responded to cartoon shows that features music like the Archie Show. The catchy theme song to Scooby Doo was written to mimic popular music at the time. Because Scooby Doo was so successful producers were quick to create clone shows like Josie and the Pussycats but none of the clones was ever as beloved as Scooby Doo.
Scooby Doo has branched out from cartoons to become one of the most successful character franchises of all time. In addition to continually running cartoon series Scooby Doo merchandise like lunch boxes, tee shirts, action figures, DVDs, VHS tapes and video games continue to be popular even today. Scooby Doo has also been a main character in several movies about the Mystery, Inc crew as the gang called themselves. Both cartoon films and a live action movie using special effects to create the Scooby Doo character have been made.
